Mount Saint Michaels History

Mount St Michaels was founded by the sisters of charity. The sisters of charity arrived at New South Wales in 1838 and then the sisters decided to start up a catholic school in Queensland for all of the women. The school was originally named Grantuly in 1925 and then in 1941 the school was then named Mt St Michaels. MSM was named after the archangel Michael. The school brought the women hope during the World War II. Still today Mount St Michaels is still up and running, building new buildings, teaching young girls and still in honour of the sisters of charity.

Samuel Wensley Blackall

BLACKALL

Samuel Wensley Blackall was born on May the 1st 1809 in Dublin, Ireland. When he was 24 he married Catherine Bowels in London, then when he was 39 he married again to Catherine Bond but this time in Dublin. Catherine Bond (his second wife) died in 1864 before their two children. Blackall then became sheriff in 1833 at Country Longford but then became high sheriff at Tyrone in 1861. Then later on Blackall had trouble with the colonial office for extending his leave because of some family difficuties he had had. Then in 1962 Blackall re-entered at the colonial office as the governor of Sierra Leone but in 1865 he became governor at the West African Settlements were he had some health difficulties. In 1868 they made him governor of Queensland and when he arrived in Brisbane in August there were thousands of people welcoming Blackall into Brisbane as their new governor. Afterwards there was an election and the Liberals had been defeated also Blackalls health was getting worse. Blackall was also known to be very friendly and popular with alot of people but in 1870 Blackalls health got alot worse and he knew hes time was nearly up. In 1970 the goverment decided to reserve a grave for him, Blackall looked around Towoong (where he is now buried) and selected the highest point of the cemertery although Blackall also requested to have everyone as possible to be at his funeral. Then 3 months later Blackall had past away on the 2nd of January 1871. His furnal was as he wished, on the highest point and many people came to say there goodbyes
to the well loved governor. At Toowong cemerty, Blackall has the biggest monutment too as he was governor of Brisbane for 3 years and we all remember and thank him.

Turrbal People

Turrbal Tribe History.
The Turrbal people are the traditional and original land owners of Brisbane for 100’s of years, they referred to Brisbane as ‘Meeaan-Jin’. The Turrbal tribe lived near the water ways and creeks of Brisbane as fishing was there primary source for getting food.
The white settlement in Brisbane was in 1825 and by the end of the 1840’s the Europeans  had driven the Turrbal tribe out of their traditional homes and did not let them cross back in or they were able to kill them right then and there and that is why we have so many Boundary Roads in Queensland. The English also brought over a type of alcohol which the Turrbal people were not used to and because of what the Europeans brought over it killed many of the Turrbal people.
Although many Turrbal people sadly died, there are still many Turrbal people still thankfully living today.

Glenlyon House

The Glenlyon house was built in 1876 which is a bit over 140 years old and is still standing this very day. Glenlyon house is one of the first ever houses built in the Enoggera creek area, Ashgrove. The house was made out of local clay and was built for a man named Alexander Stewart which was also the man
who planned out what this house must look like. Alexander Stewart was born in Scotland and when he died in 1918 his house, Glenlyon was named after the place he was born and grew up in at Scotland.  Then the Marist Fathers who came from New Zealand rented the Glenlyon house in 1927.
Three years later the Marist Fathers ended up buying the house.

This house is very significant by how old and big it is. The other amazing thing is that this house, over 140years is still standing in Ashgrove today.

first post

My Time so far at Mt St Michaels-
My experience so far at Mt St Michaels has been really good but this is only the start. MSM is way more different then primary school, MSM has triple the homework, you have to move around a lot (which kills your feet) and you get different teachers nearly everyone period. But other than all of that MSM is an amazing school, with fantastic teachers aka Mr Noonan & Ms Sargent.
First Impression-  When I first found out I was coming to this school, I didn’t like that idea, I wanted to go to where my best friends where going, but on my first day here I realised it’s a new start, I will still see my old friends again but now I can make new ones.
My favourite subject- Is probably Homeroom (; no actually, definitely SOSE! Best teacher ever, haha.
Friends- I have made many new friends and I Love them all but I’ll still never forget the old ones.
MSM- Our assembly’s here are different but funny like our Pos-ed launch and the year 12 theme, which was amazing when all the year 12’s dressed up as villains and superheros the theme was “we can all be a hero!’ and the dancing and theme was funny as but amazing…… all the older kids here are very helpful too for when I got lost, especially Emily, Gabby and Chloe. (: …
The Swimming Carnival- Go Stewart!!! Except for this year we lost this year but bring it on next year!!
Favourite memory so far- is when Mr Noonan broke the door funniest thing ever, haha! ;D
My Greatest Challenge- My greatest challenge so far is probably the first day, just coming here not knowing anyone one in my homeroom, trying to make new friends even though your so scared and nervous was the biggest challenge in my life most likely!
My favourite thing at high school- Hmm….  New friends!!!!! (:
