Samuel Wensley Blackall

BLACKALL

Samuel Wensley Blackall was born on May the 1st 1809 in Dublin, Ireland. When he was 24 he married Catherine Bowels in London, then when he was 39 he married again to Catherine Bond but this time in Dublin. Catherine Bond (his second wife) died in 1864 before their two children. Blackall then became sheriff in 1833 at Country Longford but then became high sheriff at Tyrone in 1861. Then later on Blackall had trouble with the colonial office for extending his leave because of some family difficuties he had had. Then in 1962 Blackall re-entered at the colonial office as the governor of Sierra Leone but in 1865 he became governor at the West African Settlements were he had some health difficulties. In 1868 they made him governor of Queensland and when he arrived in Brisbane in August there were thousands of people welcoming Blackall into Brisbane as their new governor. Afterwards there was an election and the Liberals had been defeated also Blackalls health was getting worse. Blackall was also known to be very friendly and popular with alot of people but in 1870 Blackalls health got alot worse and he knew hes time was nearly up. In 1970 the goverment decided to reserve a grave for him, Blackall looked around Towoong (where he is now buried) and selected the highest point of the cemertery although Blackall also requested to have everyone as possible to be at his funeral. Then 3 months later Blackall had past away on the 2nd of January 1871. His furnal was as he wished, on the highest point and many people came to say there goodbyes
to the well loved governor. At Toowong cemerty, Blackall has the biggest monutment too as he was governor of Brisbane for 3 years and we all remember and thank him.
